When NLP was originally developed, the only method of transfer was training. Little was understood about the multiple levels of experience, almost nothing about the structure of generalization. So, exercises were created to entrain behavior. That is, get participants to simply repeat in sequence behaviors – techniques – that NLP’s originators had modeled.

Only that’s not how the original models, Milton Erickson, Virginia Satir and others, did it. Erickson often said don't copy me, create a new therapy for every client. Meanwhile, NLP around the world is too often taught as a collection of techniques.
