Here's My Story
A few years ago I wrote regularly for this blog at NLP Comprehensive.
One week I decided to list my beliefs and to describe them. The article contained many of the things I've learned over 50 years, from my 40+ occupations.
I thought it might save younger people some time (and maybe a few bruises and heartaches). I called it the "Ten Laws of Life" and fired it off to you readers.
But after I sent the article it wouldn't let go of my mind. I kept thinking about it, opening it up and tinkering with it, rethinking the various "laws" and re-ordering them.
It felt like it was "writing me" instead of me writing it.
Finally I was done. I re-titled the article my "12 Truths", because "laws" just sounded too — I don't know — maybe bossy or know-it-all.
And I assure you I don't.
Know it all I mean.
I'm not selling the article – it's free. You can get the new edition at http://www.tomhoobyar.com. The link is on the front page of my blog.
But here's the really important part — what I learned about life's purposes.
"12 Truths" Number Three, "What You Think About Most Is What You Get"
Quick confession. After I finished writing the article, I got in WAY over my head – I offered to teach people HOW to install these Truths into their lives.
I've learned that when I'm making the noise, "Glub, glub" it means that I'm learning something important.
Here's What I Learned
Start with the "what". Ignore the "how" when you're picking goals. At that point "how" questions are just a distraction.
It pays to dive in sometimes when you're not sure how to go about it. If you're passionate about something you should just commit to it. I was emotionally involved with this article – it wouldn't leave me alone. So I went with it.
I discovered a major purpose in my life when I tackled the self-assignment of teaching the "12 Truths" and how to get them into our lives.
That's when I really fully experienced the big difference between "What" and "How".
"What" Gives You Direction. "How" Is The Map For Your Actions
A former mentor of mine (Gary Halbert, now gone) used to say, "Motion beats meditation".
Of course, some thought in advance helps. You need to know WHAT to do. And then you need to discover HOW to do it.
This has been true about everything important I've ever learned. You can talk about "The Secret" and "Manifesting a perfect future" all you want, but at the end of the day, our lives are created by what we actually DO.
FIRST focus on choosing "what", then commit to it.
Then comes the "how", namely learn and plan and track the actions to take.
That's Big Tip Number One, And Here's Big Tip Number Two
Now we come to the second point of this ramble – which is my "12 Truths" Number Seven.
Here's A Major "What"
Truth #7 says, "Self Management and People Skills Are The Essential Keys To Success And Happiness".
Keys to success and happiness? Really? Absolutely! Here are examples:
Self-Management = First, managing your emotional state so that you are happy and resourceful as much as possible (as you learn). And second, getting yourself to do what you decide to do, when you decide it's best to do it.
People Skills = being able to get along with anyone; understanding their motivations and being able to get their understanding and support of your needs also. Whether the other person is your spouse, children, boss, employee, colleague or customer.
You have only two real possessions; your experience of what it was like to live your life, and how your relationships felt to you. And that's Truth #7.
Truth Number Seven has been addressed by people much smarter than me, and they packaged this learning in a wondrous way — the first and the last time this information will ever be offered in this form.
Here's The "How" To Gain These Skills
They packaged a Complete 20 Day NLP Training on DVD's. The Living Encyclopedia of NLP. And we are selling out the current inventory of this unique course.
WARNING: When these are gone, they're gone. We had 31 Living Encyclopedias left when we began, and we are liquidating the stock. They are too expensive to re-manufacture. And 20 Day Trainings are not offered anymore.
Choice Is Better Than No Choice
We began offering these final editions of the DVD Course with a discount, accompanied by ANOTHER discount for a future NLPCO Training.
HUGE discount – 1/3 off of each price, or $1,000 off of the DVD Course AND another $1,000 deducted from the Training tuition – discount good till 2014!
So you can buy the Living Encyclopedia DVD Course AND the NLP Training at 1/3 off, for a total discount on the two products of $2,000.
Then we realized that some folks wouldn't be able to come to Denver for NLP Training – so the $1,000 discount on Training wasn't any good to them.
Two Options Instead Of One
So we've come up with another option.
Option One – the Training Option
If you want the in-person training you will choose Option One, 1/3 off EACH of the DVD Course, and 1/3 off the Training and save $2,000.
Option Two – No Training Option
If you don't ever plan to come to Denver for in-person training, take 1/2 off the DVD course and save $1,500.

Is it NLP science or not?
No, in the sense that you can't prove the validity of an entire field scientifically. You can only disprove a theory. NLP at its essence is a modeling theory that leaves behind a trail of processes. Most of the world fails to know this, thinking NLP is just the patterns or processes.
A real case of people not seeing the forest for the trees.
There haven't been very many rigorous scienitific studies of NLP models of behavior. I suspect this is because the original developers were having too much fun discovering new models and using them to create patterns.
Their work was in such demand there was little incentive for them to take on the thankless task of outsiders trying to influence an academic field that was threatened by their work.

Cheers, and thanks for the question.
